This Kind of Hero Chapter 52

Even Though I’m Single

The Holy Light Elf woman, who was flipping through the book and reading the story, was also angered. “Are you saying that I, Anna Kalis, am lying!  I swear upon my name, everything that I’ve written is true!”

The young, Holy Light Elf man was suppressed and could only murmur with dissatisfaction, “He’s clearly just a human. . .”

“He’s not a human!” Who knows how long she had been standing there, spectating, but a female, Holy Light Elf warrior, with a thin, blade scar upon her right cheek, spoke as she stuck her heavy sword into the tiled floor. “Xu Jun possesses the mixed blood of us Holy Light Elves and the humans! How could he possibly be a human?!”

Xu Jun, quietly listening in from the side: “. . . Why do I feel like they’re insulting me?”

Demon King Rozenke, who resided in Xu Jun’s body and was quite clear that this Brave wasn’t some mixed race of human and Holy Light Elf, asked, “How can you be of a mixed bloodline?”

Xu Jun shook his head, “I’m not, I’m completely human. However, when I first arrived at the Sacred Highlands and was building up a good relationship with them, the relationship got built a bit too high. Because of this, the Holy Light Elves all really like me–especially the young, Holy Light Elf women–so they found an excuse to be more accepting of me.”

A half-elf who had the blood of humans and Holy Light Elves was much more likable than a pure-blooded human.

Although. . . Holy Light Elves didn’t usually look kindly upon half-elves either.

Back then, Xu Jun carried around this reputation and was able to traverse across the Sacred Highlands unimpeded. There were even many young Holy Light Elves who never left home that came out to find him. Truly, he had been a famous person!

“Everyone rejects those they deem as an outsider. Thus, when people meet someone likable, they hope that the other person is on their side. It’s because of this that the Holy Light Elves say that I am half Holy Light Elf and half human, that the Bright God Church says I worship the Bright God, and that the dwarves claim that there must’ve been a dwarf among my generous and heroic ancestors. They’re all like this: what it shows is that they like me.”

Xu Jun’s narcissism came from the bottom of his heart. Although his words might be true, His Majesty the Demon King still felt a bit uncomfortable.

If the sourness in his tone could manifest, he would’ve been able to make a basin full of noodles that tasted like aged, pickled cabbage, “Brave, how did you manage to become so blindly confident in yourself?”

However, his thoughts didn’t match his words. His inner heart was like the bottom of the ocean, with calm breezes and gentle waves on the surface, but roaring and savage underneath: are those puny races even useful?! Also, are you sure those people like you?! Can’t they just be using you?! They’ll take advantage of you, yet you’d still thank them!1

–Although this Brave liked killing, burning, looting, screwing people over, insulting people’s kids, and tearing off people’s clothes, he’s actually quite a righteous person! It’s impossible for him to understand the darker side of politics!

–His Majesty the Demon King did not feel that his current mental state was dangerous at all; it was like he had been dragged into a cult of some sort. _(:зゝ∠)_

When he saw that many young, female Holy Light Elves were looking at Xu Jun with sparkling eyes, the sourness of the aged, pickled cabbage noodles increased.

Not to mention, the male Holy Light Elf who was present also started looking at Xu Jun with fiery eyes!

Although he knew that this race, the Holy Light Elves, liked the strong, and that they’re style had always been like this, even then!

Even then!

His Majesty the Demon King wanted nothing more than to return to his own body! Currently, he was just a soul, so he couldn’t do anything!

Meanwhile, the Holy Light Elves present who were listening to and telling the story had no idea that a terrifying and powerful figure had taken note of them. Their current enthusiasm was like that of a person exploring a comic convention and buying a book they’ve been wanting for a while, just to find out that the story’s protagonist was also at the booth. The young Holy Light Elf lady, Anna, began talking more and more spiritedly as the onlooking crowd listened in with ever increasing joy.

The story that this young Holy Light Elf named Anna was narrating was the one Xu Jun had once told to children. However, after being refined by her artistic skills, the story seemed more mature and beautiful.

In her mouth, the Brave Xu Jun became a handsome, unrestrained, elegant, magnanimous, generous, likable, powerful, and good-at-everything, male god.

“The feeling of having a group of elven girls as fans is not bad!” Xu Jun emotionally sighed in his heart while he lightly smiled at the girl and said, “That’s right, young lady, everything you’ve said is correct. Could I perhaps buy a copy of this book you’ve written?”

Anna’s face flushed red with excitement, “No-no-no, how can I sell this to the esteemed you?! All the things written in here are your deeds! Brave Xu Jun, can y-y-you give me your signature. . .”

While Xu Jun accepted the quill and prepared to sign with a fancy, grand, high-level signature, he narcissistically told the young lady, “Looks like you have quite a deep understanding of my deeds.” However, at this moment, he realized that the atmosphere seemed to have changed.

The young Holy Light Elves surrounding him began to chatter.

“. . . Even Xu Jun said this was well written!” “It seems that–this matter–is also true!” “Xu Jun admitted to . . . the relationship between the Brave and the Demon King. . . !”

The lord Brave himself was quite confused, “What matter? What?”

His voice was drowned out in the large wave of commotion and shouting from a large portion of the young Holy Light Elves.

“It’s the matter between you and the Demon King!” “That Bright God Church or whatever’s Prophet Elder said that you are fated to kill the Demon King!” “We all think this is so romantic!” “Furthermore,  there must be a reason why you chose to become a Brave, with your life’s sole purpose being to kill the Demon King!”

Xu Jun was horrified to discover that not just the young women, but even the young men flocked over!

The young Holy Light Elves were clueless about feelings; after all, their race could reproduce asexually. Due to this, they matured a bit late in regards to love. However, even if they haven’t eaten pork, that doesn’t mean they haven’t seen pigs run! Even if they haven’t eaten red braised pork belly, that doesn’t mean they don’t want to eat it!

These holy Light Elves were like thirteen year old, human teenagers, their heads filled with fantasies of the future.

However! Xu Jun still remembered how, when he was thirteen, he had secretly liked the white dress wearing girl who lived on the corner of the street! So why were these Holy Light Elves so bent!

–No wonder your Tree of Life is being corrupted by the darkness element! It’s probably because the dissonant, rotten energy in your hearts have spilled out!

“May I ask if you really had those sort of feelings towards the Demon King!”

“The Brave and the Demon King. . . I’ve read this kind of story!”2

“A collision between righteous and darkness! Oh!”

Xu Jun was left dazed, “Wait a second, I can’t understand what you’re all saying–”

Flustered, he wanted to escape, only to get surrounded. This crowd of young Holy Light Elves currently displayed attainment similar to reporters in the entertainment industry. The male Holy Light Elf who had questioned Xu Jun’s identity before seemed to lose all care for his stall. Xu Jun saw him step onto a leopard skin from his own store–this was an intact beast skin, enough to make a complete set of high-grade light armor, and could sell for a thousand gold coins in a human market–to grab onto Xu Jun’s sleeve, “You’re not allowed to leave. . . tell us your story!”

“What story!” The pitiful Brave had climbed mountains of knives, had descended into seas of fire. He had been to the Sun God Temple ruins, down at the ocean bottom. He had spent a night in Ghoul Valley, had almost stripped His Majesty the Demon King of his underclothes, yet despite all that, he was now being blocked by a group of young, immature Holy Light Elves.

Depressing.

–Daeniste and Nar, why aren’t you guys coming to save me. . . !

Far away, Daeniste and Nar were touring hand in hand (?), while looking back and seeing the overly rambunctious shop that Xu Jun was at.

Daeniste calmly spoke, “See, it’s a good thing that we aren’t walking with Xu Jun.”

Nar: “. . .This subordinate thinks. . .”

“Ignore them,” Daeniste knew that Nar would definitely try to save Xu Jun as it was in line with his humanitarian spirit. “They’re just playing, otherwise Xu Jun would’ve gotten away already.”

Perhaps he had stepped on a rock, for he staggered into Nar’s embrace, hands pulling on Nar’s collar to bow the other’s head. His lips approached this pure and good-natured holy Knight’s ear. “Isn’t your duty today supposed to be protecting me?”

Nar subconsciously responded before realizing that something didn’t seem right: wasn’t it his mission, every day, to protect His Highness the Holy Son. . . ?

With this interruption, Nar naturally forgot about the miserable Xu Jun, and continued to pass the time with Daeniste in their two person world.

Of course, to him, this was just a form of close contact protection.

It was just like two days ago in the tree house when Daeniste had been scared by the walls covered in runes, and Nar had gotten on the bed to closely protect him.

Such was the scope of a Guardian Knight’s duty.

Xu Jun wanted to refute them. “The Demon King and I don’t have that kind of impure relationship–!” However, just as he said these words, he felt a chill all over. He inexplicably thought of the night two days prior, when he had that absurd wet dream. In his dreamscape, Demon King Rozenke was 1.9 meters tall with an aura 2.8 meters high. His appearance was handsome and his temperament was intimidating like a mountain. However, when he pressed closer to Xu Jun, his entire body was shrouded in an ambiguous aura. He spoke with a voice deeper than usual, one dissimilar to the synthetic voice Xu Jun had heard during their previous battle. Xu Jun felt like he had heard this voice before.

However, in the dreamscape, his thinking had been muddled; he had only felt that he was in a very shameful situation–originally, as a mature male, he shouldn’t have felt shame for having something as common as a wet dream. However, back then, he had found it quite unsightly. After waking up, he had even left on the bed sheets. . . . Of course he had wanted to use the Divine Spirit Elixir to clean it up, but he was forcibly stopped by Prince Ryan. . . . In the end, he had no choice but to erase his decency with fire. To the elves, he said that while dreaming, he accidentally destroyed a flame scroll and burned down the bed. =.=

He thought that he had already forgotten about this dream. However, this group of Holy Light Elves–who were clearly single, yet were still shipping couples together, and it was even this kind of unreasonable CP–had reminded him! Once again, he remembered that dream!

Detestable!

As he was being pulled around, Xu Jun’s anger had already ignited. However the target of it wasn’t this crowd of Holy Light Elves, but rather. . . himself, for having such a strange dream.

It just so happened that from beyond the crowd, an arrogant and abominable voice carried over. “Yo, what are these Holy Light Elves doing? Are they actually laying their hands on a human?”

“Hehe, perhaps I’m mistaken. These aren’t Holy Light Elves, but rather a group of bonobos in heat?”

The author has something to say:

Bonobos live in rain forests and, like chimpanzees, and live a societal life. In many ways, they are similar to chimpanzees. However, compared to chimpanzees, they are more peace-loving. Furthermore, compared to chimpanzees, they are more sexually active.

This is a more euphemistic way of saying that. Comparing a person with a bonobos is quite insulting.

Translator’s Niche:

[1] Literal is “once you get sold, you’d count the money for them,” with the idea being that someone sells you off, yet you’re oblivious and even help them count the money earned from the transaction, thinking that they’re helping you out. In context, Rozenke is basically saying that Xu Jun is ignorant to the possible ulterior motives of the races, and by only thinking of the positives (that the races like him), and that he will get taken advantage of, yet still think well of them.

[2] There was an onomatopoeia thing here that I left out cause it seemed a bit tacky/out of place, before the sentence. It was the person going ‘ying ying ying’ (嘤嘤嘤) which is a sort of cutesy crying.
