This Kind of Hero Chapter 67

Kind Father, Filial Son

His Majesty the Demon King was heavily invested in this image crystal. Seeing that a dragon youth and a unicorn had suddenly appeared at Xu Jun’s side, he was in a foul mood. Luckily, his emotions had always been reserved and were not openly displayed upon his face. He simply snorted a few times with dissatisfaction in his heart.

. . . Xu Jun, just look at yourself and the kinds of people you’re mingling with!

That dragon is a boneless loach, constantly hanging off of others with such a foolish and stupid expression. And that unicorn, well just look at how he smiles so flirtatiously! You can tell he’s not a decent unicorn with just a glance!

Just look at you, Xu Jun and the life you’ve led after leaving me. Such thoughts suddenly surfaced within His Majesty the Demon King’s head. In this moment, he obviously cared not if it was “Xu Jun who left him or him who left Xu Jun.” In short, his meaning was this: without him, Xu Jun was getting mixed up with all sorts of strange fellows.

Inexplicably, he suddenly felt a bit proud of himself ~(≧▽≦)/~

Although His Majesty the Demon King’s inner thoughts were surging like a storm beneath, neither his expression nor tone changed on the surface. It was only the Ice Lord, having followed him for countless years, who could read bits of His Majesty’s mood from his proper and solemn expression.

An alarm was immediately raised in the Ice Lord’s heart: His Majesty the Demon King has still not forgotten about that human Brave!

What was so good about that Brave?!

Suddenly, in the scene, that male unicorn turned around. Looking in the direction of the Bone Bird that the Demon King controlled, he laughed flirtatiously. Finally, his face was clearly displayed in the Bone Bird’s field of view. When Rozenke saw him, he suddenly remembered something.

This fellow’s bloodline wasn’t that of an ordinary Unicorn Beastman. Demon King Rozenke sat up straighter. He remembered a military campaign from a few tens of millennia ago. Since his memory of it was now a bit murky, as a war involving many Gods was always chaotic, he could only recall a face which greatly resembled this male unicorn’s having appeared on the battlefield where the God of Darkness and the Goddess of Forests fought against each other.

That Unicorn Beastman back then also had a smile as flirtatious as the one now, a smile that really made one want to give him a beating. He had clearly been one of the Forest Goddess’ subordinates, yet he never exerted much effort in his fights. His Majesty the Demon King remembered that after being exhausted from back to back battles, that fellow then defeated him, but he didn’t die.

That Unicorn Beastman was frivolous and vile. He dared to mock His Majesty the Demon King as a weakling, yet he did not deal the final blow. Instead, he proposed, “Although we stand on opposing sides, I personally have a favorable impression of demons. Let’s agree to a truce.” Whether he was sincere or not was hard to tell.

Rozenke. . . although he was arrogant, he still had to acknowledge that he had once been spared.

At the time, had that Unicorn Beastman–who was also the Unicorn King–truly wanted to perform a meritorious deed, he could have just killed the Demon King.

It was not as if Demon King Rozenke’s had never been defeated throughout the course of his long life. However, whether it was that male unicorn, or the powerful God of Darkness, none of them had ever made him truly concede.

Rozenke recalled his Bone Bird.

Xu Jun was completely unaware that someone had been monitoring him. His head was full of thoughts about this son he had gotten on the cheap–fuck, he was only just over twenty so why did he suddenly have a teenage son!

Furthermore, if he remembered correctly, this dragon egg had hatched only a year ago. Even if time scaled differed between the game world and the real world, it has still only been four to five years. How was it that a dragon which hatched only four to five years ago had already grown this large!

“Since the dragon race rapidly matures, yet ages extremely slowly afterwards,” the male unicorn explained. “They differ completely from humans.”

Xu Jun glanced at the youth who had now put on the mage’s robe. Wearing it, he appeared even more handsome. The corners of his mouth twitched as Xu Jun asked, “Since you’ve already grown so big, can you stop pulling at me?”

The dragon youth, Lance, was just as foolish and sluggish as before, however, clothes make the man. After dressing up, his foolishness and sluggishness transformed into steadiness. This idiot thought it over before replying earnestly, “. . . Don’t want to.”

“. . . Papa, I’m only four this year.”

Xu Jun: “. . .”

Yet despite this, he still reached out with his hand and patted the youth’s head. Who knew why it was that the dragon race, who’s original forms only grew scales and not hair, would have such supple and lush hair in their human form. With this kind of hair, they might as well shoot a shampoo ad. Xu Jun rubbed this child’s head a couple times, thinking that it was quite nice to the touch. Seeing that this child was squinting with happiness. Xu Jun’s heart softened.

According to what that male unicorn had said, after being sent to to Icefrost Dragon’s land, this child had not been able to adapt to the lifestyle of the dragons there. He also refused to recognize his biological parents. Was this child any different from himself, who had been raised in an orphanage without ever knowing the love and shelter of parents?

No, perhaps there was a difference. At least there were many kids in the orphanage, so Xu Jun still had a group of friends he could play with and could be said to have had a normal childhood. However, this child. . . the dragon race possessed low fertility. Wasn’t it possible that he didn’t even have a friend of the same age in the Icefrost Dragon’s territory?

He suddenly felt a bit soft-heared.

Perhaps he should have never let this child see his figure back then. Then this child wouldn’t have confused who his actual father was.

“For making you experience this kind of childhood. . . I’m truly sorry,” Xu Jun softly apologized.

Lance lovably shook his head, “No, I’ve been living well.”

Those words made Xu Jun feel even more like one of those parents who abandoned their child at home without care or concern. He suddenly felt extremely guilty.

Meanwhile, the male unicorn silently observed it all. He watched as this youth feigned obedience. Paired with that Brave named Xu Jun, they were the striking image of a “kind father with his filial son.”1

. . . It was too spicy for his eyes.

He could practically see the thoughts running through Xu Jun’s head! Wasn’t it just stuff along the lines of, I’m sorry child for leaving you with the Icefrost Dragons and wronging you and such? –Wake up human! With how much importance the Icefrost Dragons placed on their young, they had sheltered him from all harm and held him close to their hearts!

It was Lance, this brat, who refused to get close to them! Everyday he has this foolish expression plastered on, yet his mind is full of evil tricks! With this child’s ability to screw people over, he had one victim for every scheme of his!

The male unicorn reminisced on the time when this child had also screwed him over. He then noticed that Lance had glanced towards him from an angle Xu Jun could not see. His gaze, paired with his ice-colored eyes, was exceptionally frosty.

The male unicorn’s eyes drooped downward.

Yikes. Jayce suddenly felt sympathy for this luckless man named Xu Jun.

They sat down and began eating the rations that Xu Jun had brought. Mantou went off to munch on some grass and the small fruits which the trees bore. Lance ate the most, and also the quickest. He ate like he had been starving for years. Unable to stand Xu Jun’s condemning gaze, Jayce let out the truth.

“Don’t look at me like that, human Brave,” he snorted coldly. “I’ve not mistreated him.”

Lance, while gnawing on jerky, also piped up, “It’s not Teacher Jayce’s fault, Papa. It’s just that I can eat a lot.”

He slightly lowered his head as he spoke, eyes averted from Xu Jun like a child who had done wrong. A slight flush even colored his pale cheeks.

In his heart, Jayce rolled his eyes. Kid, just keep pretending!

When have you ever called me teacher before now?!

Xu Jun listened to what they had to say. This dragon youth, Lance, really did have a great appetite. He had followed Jayce all the way south, and no matter where they went, he would be eating. Jayce didn’t even dare to bring him into any cities, fearful that in a moment of hunger, Lance would simply eat the people around him. The two ate and slept out in the wild. To the large magic beasts and wild animals, they were a calamity. For example, the griffins that resided in this forest. Lance could eat two of them in one meal. As for ordinary beasts like wolves and deer, one meal would include ten of them.

The bloody smell that Xu Jun had noticed upon just entering the forest was actually the scent that remained after Lance’s meal of two griffins.

. . . That’s right, they were eaten raw.

Dragons, such as the Icefrost Dragons who rearely interacted with other civilized races often ate raw foods. Dragons were lazy and unfamiliar with cooking. For them, eating food raw was more convenient.

Lance ate the jerky Xu Jun had given him without any complaints. Instead, he seemed quite happy.

“These are good. I already feel full,” Lance commented after eating five chunks of jerky the size of a grown man’s fist, his eyes squinting like a content kitten.

“Of course, these are incredibly filling. . . “Xu Jun replied subconsciously. In the next second, he remembered that the youth beside him was a champion of eating and couldn’t possibly be full from a couple chunks of meat. “Wait, is what you’re saying true?”

Lance was also quite doubtful. “But my stomach really does feel full. So comfy.”

He hugged Xu Jun’s elbow while acting spoiled, “. . . I’ve never felt this comfy before.”

Xu Jun frowned as looked over the facts. These jerky chunks were made from of relatively ordinary wild animals. Whether they were made from venison or the meat of a mountain goat, he could no longer remember, but what mattered was that it was not the meat of a magic beast. The ingredients, however, had been carefully selected. For Braves at his level, the rations he brought along generally possessed some sort of extraordinary effect. After all, he could not rely on potions all the time. Sometimes, after a battle, he would have no choice but to eat a meal to regain his health.

Even the processing for this kind of simple jerky required tens of different herbs. Some of these herbs were quite pricey: a single box of them could cost a few hundred gold. Common folk could never afford it.

However, food items didn’t have a cooldown which made them highly convenient.

Perhaps the reason why Lance could never eat his fill. . . was because meats didn’t contain enough energy for him to absorb? This jerky, however, which contained the effects of many different types of herbs, was actually easier to absorb?

After some consideration, Xu Jun handed Lance a bowl of vegetable soup. “Try drinking this.”

Lance gulped down this bowl of soup that had become known as the Divine Vegetable Soup of Magic Replenishment within the game, and let out a burp. “This is good.”

He grabbed Xu Jun’s hand and placed it over the pit of his stomach. “I feel bloated here.”

Xu Jun’s expression was unreadable as he patted this brat’s stomach. “If you still weren’t full. . . then this dad of yours wouldn’t be able to afford to raise you.” This vegetable soup had quite the ordinary name, but one bowl contained at least fifty gold coins worth of ingredients!

Xu Jun had adapted to his new role rather quickly. Still, he missed how Lance’s eyes lit up when he had referred to himself as his dad (except he hadn’t actually).

Such happiness _(:зゝ∠)_

The young Icefrost Dragon brat’s lips pursed his lips and smiled lightly.

The Unicorn Beastman Jayce once again had to witness the scene of a “kind father with his filial son.”

Fuck, it was too spicy for his eyes.

Author Has Something to Say:

Demon King Rozenke: It’s the nth day of my absence, I don’t know if Xu Jun misses me yet.

Lance, the child gotten on the cheap: Shoo, shoo, off to the side with you. Xu Jun is busy being with me. He’s long forgotten about you →_→

Translator’s Niche:

[1] This is an idiom that I decided to translate this literally, since I think it fits in with the context, but just know that this can also represent the familial love between a parent and their child. It’s also the same exact idiom that’s used in the title.
