This Kind of Hero Chapter 59

Moonlight Elves

Tens of thousands of years ago, the Holy Light Elves had worshipped the Sun God. The Sun God of yore was equivalent in standing to the Bright God that humans currently believed in. However, unlike the Bright God, the Sun God had actually existed. It was said that when the sun first appeared in the sky, his soul was born. The Sun God was handsome and robust. He liked to wear muslin cloth that exposed his well-built chest. He possessed a head of messy, curly, golden hair that appeared to contain all the light in the world and symbolized his unfading vitality and enthusiasm.

Holy Light Elves evolved from elemental bodies of light, and the first element of light came from the sun. Thus, the ancient Holy Light Elves were a race subordinate to the Sun God.

The Sun God’s name was written in Godscript, but there no longer existed anyone who knew how to pronounce it. Following the deaths of the many gods, Godscript had lost its glory. When Xu Jun had entered the Sun God Temple ruins, he had also seen the Sun God’s name written in “God” script. It was a lengthy set of unintelligible characters that twisted and slanted everywhere.

. . . Luckily that best by date was written in the common language, which really helped along Xu Jun’s plans for looting the place.

His Majesty the Sun God is truly admirable. His spirit of self-sacrifice for the sake of others is something that Xu Jun will forever remember.

However, when facing the Holy Light Elves. . . he should word things a bit differently.

After all, the Holy Light Elves had previously worshipped the Sun God. If he told them that he had cleaned out one of their temples, his friendship with the Holy Light Elves would probably come to an end.

Why did the Holy Light Elves and the Bright God Church have such an awkward relationship despite them both worshipping the holy light? Was it not because the Bright God Church fabricated a Bright God for their own benefit and usurped the position that was rightfully the Sun God’s?

Although the Sun God had fallen, and times would inevitably change, the Holy Light Elves would rather be atheists than to invent a god for the sake of improving their own standing, even if it was normal for newly risen powers to “fabricate” a god to consolidate their power.

Before, it had been the gods who created people, but now it was the people who created gods.

Xu Jun knew what kind of personality the Holy Light Elves’ had. Franky, he really liked people who had blunt and honest personalities, such as the Holy Light Elves. Like this, he told them the story of how he had obtained the Divine Spirit Elixir, while making sure to leave out certain parts. Fortunately for Daeniste and Nar, they were able to listen in. They heard Xu Jun vaguely tell of how, at the time, he had been touring the Northern Shores when a fisherman had asked him to defeat a sea monster. As he dove underwater, he found the vestiges of the tens of thousands of years old Sun God Temple, almost as if he had been guided there. After entering, he discovered this bottle of Divine Spirit Elixir. . . with the best by date written underneath.

On this point, Xu Jun was quite clever. He only took out one bottle of Divine Spirit Elixir, and told them that he had only obtained a single bottle. This elixir was really good stuff and it was all too easy for it to attract those with hidden motives. Although Xu Jun trusted everyone at the scene, it was still better to be careful.

“At the time, there seemed to be something guiding me (the game’s system) amidst the darkness. I saw a golden thread between me and the Sun God Temple that was pulling me in (this was a plug-in for the game that Xu Jun would only occasionally use on missions with the highest difficulty),” Xu Jun his expression relaxing as he recalled his memories.

Thinking back, that plug-in had been really easy to use. However, someone then reported it since it supposedly ruined the fun of the game. . . so Xu Jun also stopped using it.

The people surrounding him were dumbstruck: “! ! !”

Queen Ellie, the elders, along with Daeniste and his companion, Nar, were all stupefied.

“The–the Sun God’s guidance!”

“His Majesty the Sun God!”

“Xu Jun, y-y-you, are you for real?!”

They looked Xu Jun up and down with wide eyes. The Alchemist Elder even tore off the face mask he had been applying (. . .) and ran to Xu Jun. “Let me take a look! It’s possible that there are traces of the Sun God on your body!”

Xu Jun quickly shook off the Alchemist Elder, who had been restored to the baby-faced appearance of his youth.”What do you think you’re doing, getting all physical with me!”

Only His Majesty, Demon King Rozenke, let out a smile of understanding: it was as he had guessed, Xu Jun definitely had a connection to some deity.

Which was why the Sun God Temple had been willing to open its gates for him.

Then, was the Sun God. . . his ancestor?

The experienced and knowledgeable Demon King, who knew of how dense His Majesty the Sun God was, sunk into contemplation. In his memories, the Sun God was an odd fellow. Although his face was one that attracted all sorts of goddesses, the Sun God had never harbored any thoughts towards them. Thus, he was someone who received the most affection from goddesses, but also the most scorn.

So, what exactly was the origin of Xu Jun’s bloodline?

It couldn’t have been that His Majesty the Sun God underwent asexual reproduction?

Theoretically, it was possible to do something like that with magic. . . .

Demon King Rozenke did not even notice that his thoughts had developed in a strange direction. In his heart, all that increased was his curiosity towards Xu Jun’s body. If Xu Jun really was of the Sun God’s bloodline, then Xu Jun’s cluelessness towards love suddenly seemed to make sense?

But that was of no matter. He possessed over ten thousand ways of capturing this Brave who had no sense of crisis.

Xu Jun inexplicably trembled. His back suddenly felt quite chilly for some reason.

“Prince Ryan, could you help me look around? Is someone targeting me?” Xu Jun asked with uncertainty.

‘Prince Ryan’ amiably responded to him, “Don’t worry, nothing’s wrong. You’re safe.”

On the other hand, after witnessing the powerful effect of the Divine Spirit Elixir and its miraculous history, Queen Ellie and the elders agreed to allow Xu Jun to attempt saving their Tree of Life. It was Xu Jun himself who would be taking the Divine Spirit Elixir to accomplish this task and not them. This demonstrated their faith in Xu Jun.

–After all, Brave Xu Jun was a human whom the remnant spirit of the magnificent Sun God had guided!

Xu Jun was moved, but also solemn: if the Divine Spirit Elixir did not work, then there was nothing more he could do.

Everyone’s complexion was grave, their mood somber. They all knew what they were facing. Even Daeniste was a bit nervous. Although the Bright God Church and the Holy Light Elves had their differences, both were beings that relied on the holy light to live their lives normally and would ally in the face of a crisis. Furthermore, if the Holy Light Elves’ Tree of Life truly fell. . . .

Queen Ellie breathed in deeply. “If things end up that way, then there’s nothing we can do. It would simply be our fate.”

“A fate shared by both us and the Moonlight Elves.”

Meow meow meow? What did this have to do with the Moonlight Elves? Xu Jun questioned, only to hear Queen Ellie continue with an authoritative voice, “Prepare for all-out war. We’re going to snatch the Moonlight Elves’ Tree of Life and make use of it to get by.”

She faced Xu Jun and calmly laughed. “Relax, don’t place too much importance on your actions. There’s no need to be stressed, Xu Jun. Our last gamble does not rest with you.”

Xu Jun blinked a few times.

The other elders did not refute her, but rather displayed a resolute expression of willing to stake everything into this plan. In this moment, even Xu Jun, who disliked them, felt the Moonlight Elves were truly unfortunate to have the bandit-like Holy Light Elves as their neighbors. . . .

Say, in the past, why didn’t the Moonlight Elves think things through? Why did they decide to establish their tribe in the Jadeite Forest right beside the Sacred Highlands? _(:зゝ∠)_

However, speak of the Moonlight Elves and the Moonlight Elves shall appear.

“Your Majesty! A Moonlight Elf tried to break into the forbidden land of the Tree of Life!” The powerful and resounding voice of Holy Light Elf Knight Jesse transmitted from outside the palace.

Ellie raised an elegant eyebrow while exuding a fierce aura. In a manner befitting a queen, she ordered, “Bring them in!”

The air inside the palace instantly froze; the atmosphere was so tense it felt like one could squeeze droplets out from it.

Creating a disturbance during such a critical time. . . just what were the Moonlight Elves up to?

Ellie laughed coldly. She had already known that the Moonlight Elves would not be so obedient, but never did she expect them to be this brazen. To dare stir things up even after their envoy had already arrived; did they not fear that the Holy Light Elves would detain their emissaries?

Or were they trying to incite their own race’s anger, then use it as a catalyst for some other scheme?

The intruder was suppressed and brought into the palace. He was a high ranking Moonlight Elf with passable strength, at least enough to miraculously infiltrate into the forbidden lands–it was only at the outskirts of the Tree of Life that Knight Commander Jesse managed to apprehend him. However, for a high ranking elf, he was extremely cowardly. By the time Knight Commander Jesse brought him in, his face was already pale and tears, along with mucus, were strewn across his face. Jesse frowned as he tilted his head away.

Disgusting.

Was this person even an elf? Even a goblin was better than this!

Furthermore, this Moonlight Elf simply sat on the ground, unmoving. He laughed and cried insanely while shouting, “You’ve captured me–! Hahaha, but it’s useless! It was black! Your Tree of Life was also corroded by the dark element!”

“Hahaha, it’s no use even if you kill me! Let’s all die together!”

The Holy Light Elves: “. . .”

Daeniste and Nar: “. . .”

Xu Jun: “. . .”

Wait a second–what did he mean by “also corroded by the dark element?”

The arrested Moonlight Elf spy hammered the ground and collapsed into tears and laughter, “Going to die–we’re all going to die! Hehehehe, you all are also doomed! The collapse of the Trees of Life will bring both our races to an end! Right, right, it was written as such in that elven prophecy!”

The meaning of his words were quite clear. While the Holy Light Elves’ Tree of Life had been corrupted by the dark element, the situation over by the Moonlight Elves was likely just as disastrous.

Ellie’s eyes widened as she began to wail, “Xu-Xu-Xu-Xu Jun QAQ, if it’s like this, then you are our last remaining hope!”

. . . . . .

“Prince Linka, I hope you know what you’ve done!” Inside of the Golden Finch Pavilion, Elder Dute was pacing back and forth. His anger was so great that he did not even address the prince as “Your Highness.” In fact, had Linka not been a prince, he would have seriously considered strangling this child to death.

In such dire circumstances, he actually dared to send out a subordinate to probe the Holy Light Elves’ Tree of Life!

This was on purpose! This was definitely, purposefully infuriating the Holy Light Elves!

Your Majesty the Elven King, why do you have such a failure of a son?!1

However, Prince Linka, with a crooked mouth, slanted eyes, and a slovenly appearance, laughed maliciously. “So what? And didn’t we confirm it? Linmi transmitted back a message stating that he discovered traces of the dark element in the outskirts of the Holy Light Elves’ holy land.”

Upon saying the words, “holy land,” his mouth split into a sneer.

“You!” Elder Dute, despite his abundant patience, was angered by Prince Linka to the point where steam seemed to rise out of his seven orifices. Finally, unable to endure, he did what should never be done in the Golden Finch Pavilion.

He cast magic.

Thus, when the Holy Light Elf Imperial Guard were out on patrol, they discovered a few Moonlight Elf elders and their prince. . . all of them tightly bound, with not even their mouths exposed, by the vines of a deathly fig.

Translator’s Niche:

[1] The actual translation would be “why do you have this kind of son who fails to see the bigger picture,” but I decided to translate it more loosely as “why do you have such a failure of a son” since I believed the wording fit better, even if it wasn’t as specific, and still conveyed the proper mood.
